USDOL Region 5 Solicitor Addresses Employment Law & Litigation Committee

USDOL Region 5 Solicitor, Joan Gestrin, reviewed the responsibilities of the Solicitor’s Office and explained the recent initiative of the Department regarding misclassification of workers as independent contractors. She described a couple of significant, recent federal district decisions where improper classification had occurred. Committee members also discussed how the Council and Department can work together to help employers meet compliance with myriad of federal employment laws.

The Committee agreed the Council should pursue legislation in 2012 that aligns state and federal wage hour law in regards to the salary threshold for determining exempt employees.
